EPIC BATTLE OF THE MEET

Stanford signee Catherine Littlewood(Queen Creek,AZ) owns a best of 5,419 set this season in winning the AZ State Heptathlon Championships. That’s the 10th-best US High School performer ever. She helped her team to a narrow second-place finish(56) to Highland’s 58 by finishing 3rd in the 400m(57.12), 4th in the 100mH(14.25), running a leg on the 4x100m that finished 4th(47.49), and winning the long jump(20’07”).

Last year, freshman JaiCieonna Gero-Holt set the US HS freshman record of 5,401(now US #12 All-Time) in the heptathlon in finishing second at the USATF U20 Championships. She broke the frosh record of 5,094 set by Bryanna Craig(Millville, NJ) in 2019 by 307 points. That earned her a place  on the  World U20 USA team, where she finished 17th with  a score of 5,212. That was at the ripe old age of 15 years, 8 months, and 2 days(DOB 12/06/2006). This year, the soph won the Washington State 4A state championship in the 100mH(14.45), the javelin(139’03”), the high jump(5’10”), and  finished second in the long jump(18’11.25”)  for her state championship-winning team that  scored 67 points.

Littlewood and Gero-Holt will have a chance to break the  the meet record of 5,464 set by Emma Fitzgerald(Thayer Academy, Braintree, MA) in 2016 and move ahead of US HS #2 performer Kendell Williams’ 5,572 set in her junior year in 2012.
The soph class record of 5,170 was set by Kendell Williams(Kell, Marietta, GA) in 2018 and could also be under threat by Gero-Holt.

University of Illinois-bound Sophia Beckmon(Oregon City, OR) leapt to the US HS #2 All Time mark of 22’04” at the Nike/Jesuit Twilight Relays on April 28. That was nearly a foot better than her previous best,21’04.25”, and left her one inch shy of the Kate Hall’s(Lake Region, Naples, ME) 22’05” mark set in 2015 at the NSAF Championships. The three time Oregon State 6A champ has won NON the past two years and will look for the trifecta in 2023. In the past year, she has shown improved speed, lowering her wind-legal bests from 11.81 to 11.32(0.49 seconds) in the 100 and from 23.91 to 23.11(0.80 seconds) in the 200; she will be favored in those events at NON.

Last year, there were four teams that ran 7:37.90 or faster in the US High School ranks. This year, there have been 15 teams that have run 7:39.77 or faster.

The fastest two times last year were run at NON as Central(Hinsdale, IL) came from behind on the final lap of the  anchor leg to win in the fifth-fastest time in meet history, 7:32.15 to 7:32.79(Ridge, Basking Ridge NJ). Hinsdale’s splits were 1:50.22(Colby Revord), 1:53.82(Aden Bandukwala), 1:57.16(Michael Skora)  and 1:50.95(Dan Watcke, a University of Oregon signee).  Central returns three members of that team in Aden Bandukwala,Skora, and Watcke. Revord will be replaced by Miller, who has a best of 1:55.81.

The field is peppered with  high-powered teams that should make it a competitive race.
Vestavia Hills(Brimingham, AL) looks  best on paper as they have 1:50.91 man Max Armstrong,a junior, and University of Virginia-bound Alex Leath, who ran 1:48.46 to finish second at the New Balance National Indoor meet, bookending their lineup. Tyler Mathews of Red Mountain(Mesa, AZ) sports a 1:48.72 personal best and can keep his team in the running for the title. Iowa City(IA) is a senior-laden group that has excellent balance. Northern Arizona University commit Ford Washburn is supported by Truman Thompson and Ammon Smith — both are 1:54-or-faster legs that will keep them at the front of the pack.

Speed Merchants

An incredibly deep field of blazing  talent will make for an exciting competition in the sprints and track’s most celebrated race, the 100-meter dash.

Rodrick Pleasant(Serra, Gardena, CA) is making the trek to Eugene and will enroll in classes at the U of O following NON. He’ll play defensive back for the Ducks and his speed should wreak havoc on PAC-12 wide receivers and on the track as well. His meet record 10.20 win at CIF State was followed 30 minutes later by a 20.67 win in the 200m. He said in his Talkin NON with Tee instagram live interview that he was a bit hurt during that spectacular double, but is now healthier and wanting to go 10 seconds. That’s heady stuff and with more rest between events at NON, he’ll be primed and ready to go for a faster time. His best wind legal time of 10.14 is tied for 10th best US HS All-Time.

Sophomore Maurice Gleaton(Langston Hughes, Fairburn, GA) blasted a 10.14 wind legal time to win the Georgia State 6A title in a state meet record performance. Gleaton has come a long way as he ran 11.14 as a freshman. His 10.14 was a sophomore class record and shattered the 10.23 mark set by Rynell Parson(Stevens, San Antonio,TX) in 2007. His 20.52 (+0.1) he ran on April 25 at the Georgia 6A-Region 5 meet was 0.1 second slower than the sophomore record of 20.51 set by Tyreese Cooper(Norland, Miami,FL) in 2017. The 5’10” sophomore also plays wide receiver for his school that won the 6A title going undefeated(15-0).

Miles Jones(Mansfield Lake Ridge, Mansfield, TX), Ashton Torns (Westlake,Austin, TX), Ernest Campbell, (Refugio, TX), and John Sherman III (LaVergne,TN) come in with marks of 10.32 or faster. To get into the final, you may need a 10.50 or faster and there is a chance that the  national HS record of 10 — set by Trentavis Friday(Cherrysville, NC) in 2014 — could fall.

10.09(+3.3) Rodrick Pleasant, Serra(Gardena, CA), Sr, University of Oregon, 2023 CIF 1st 100m, 10.20(+2.0), 1st 200m, 20.67(+1.5), 2023 Mt. After Shawnti Jackson(South Granville, Creedmoor, NC), a University of Arkansas signee, lowered the US High School Record to 10.89 at the Music City Track Carnival on June 3, eyes turned to Mia Brahe-Pedersen’s(Lake Oswego, OR) response. She’ll get that opportunity in a head-to-head matchup with Jackson at the Brooks PR Invitational and then at NON, where she’ll get to run on the same track that she ran her best 100m time.

Brahe-Pedersen has had a remarkable few months in lowering her best by 0.17 seconds to the now fourth-fastest time in US High School history in winning her state meet. She is the second-fastest junior in history behind Brianna Williams’(Northeast, Oakland Park, Florida) 10.94 mark set in 2019.  Brahe-Pedersen is also the  seventh-fastest in the 200m with her 22.61, which she ran into a -0.4 headwind, which is equivalent to between 22.43(+2.0) to 22.57(+0.0).

Three NCAA D1 signees — Oregon City’s Sophia Beckmon, Jameesia Ford (Jack Britt,Fayetteville, NC), and Tori Carmeron(Stephenville, TX) — all have marks under 11.35. The stiff competition will make for possible improvements for the field, which could see a shake-up of the  NSAF Meet all-time top five and US HS All-Time 100m lists.

Sophomore Sidi Njie(Westlake, Atlanta, GA) said in his Talkin NON with Tee instagram live interview  that he was surprised to see his time of 45.46 pop up when he won the Georgia State 7A meet. That shaved 0.57 seconds off his preliminary time as he won going away by 0.73 seconds. That tied him for 19th-fastest time in US High School history and the second-fastest sophomore time behind legendary Obea Moore’s(Muir, Pasadena, CA) 45.14 in 1995.

“ If you watched the video, you could see me turn back to look at the clock. I was amazed,” said Njie. He added that he felt “heavy” at his state meet and he didn’t think he was going that fast.

Since then, Njie has been practicing and resting in bed. He  shared that  he ran a 32.7 300m in practice and “was ready.” For NON, he was going to be “lighter” for possibly faster time.

Fast and Furious 8

Three athletes with personal bests between 1:48.31- 1:48.72 plus another with a best of 1:49.79-wow! This race will have the makings for a historic race.

Penn State-bound Kaleb Nastari(United, Hanover, OH) followed his district winning time of 1:49.31 with a Ohio HS All-Time record of 1:48.31 at the state meet. It was also the 28th-fastest in US HS history. His unofficial 200m splits were 25.5, 27.4, 29.5 and 25.5[source: Bruce Kritzler].  It was his second outdoor 800m title. Indoors, he won the Ohio State D2/D3 indoor title and finished second at the Nike Indoor Nationals with a 1:51.88.

Alex Leath(Vestavia Hills, Birmingham, AL) has gone undefeated in the 800m this season. His only setback was a second-place finish to Tinoda Matsatsa(St. Andrew’s Episcopal, Potomac, MD) at NBNI- 1:48.27 to 1:48.46. Those were the third- and fourth-fastest times in US HS indoor track history.

Junior Tyler Mathews(Red Mountain, Mesa, AZ) led his team to the inaugural  Arizona State Open Division title with a win in the 4 x 800m (7:41.40) on the first day, and wins in the 1600m(4:12.11) and the 800m(1:48.72) on the second day to go along with an eight-place finish in the 4 x 400m (3:20.63)! The 800m time was the then-fastest time in the nation and came just a couple of hours after his state record time of 4:12.11 in the 1600m. The 45 points came from a team composed of distance runners who edged Desert Vista by four points. Mathews will have more rest this time as the two events he is entered in — the 4 x 8 and the 800m —  will be on Friday and Saturday.

William Heslam(Roosevelt, Portland, OR) will have home track advantage. The University of Oregon signee has drastically improved over his junior year and won the 800m-1600m state double at the Oregon State 6A championships. It was the first win in the 800m by a Roosevelt athlete since 1945. His best time, 1:49.79 came in winning the Oregon Relays at — you guessed it — Hayward Field.

It’s hard to call Jackson Heidesch(Dowling Catholic, West Des Moines, IA) a sleeper in the field, but his 800m personal best is “only” 1:54.38. However, Heidesch is fresh off a 3:59.08 fourth-place finish at the HOKA Festival of Miles Boys Championship race. He’ll drop down here in the individual 800m after running the 4 x 800m on Friday.

It’s fairly rare to clear the 7’00” mark in high school. NON will have four in its scheduled lineup.

The best will be University of Georgia signee Riyon Rankin(Brunswick, GA). The senior has cleared 7’01” four times in his career with his best, 7’03.75” coming in winning this year’s Georgia State 6A Championship. That tied him for the 27th best jump in US High School history.

University of Oklahoma signee Kyren Washington(Santa Fe, Alachua, FL) visited University of Georgia before signing with the Sooners. His best of 7’01” came at his home meet. He went on to win his second consecutive Florida State 2A title on his final jump with a clearance of 6’09.75”. Washington is so eager to get to Eugene that he set up his own gofundme site and has been working extra at his part time job to make the trip.

University of Texas signee Brennen McHenry(Brophy College Preparatory, Phoenix, AZ) is multi talented owning a personal best of 24’10.25” in the long jump, 11.35 in the 100m, and 15.83 in the 110mH to go along with his 7’00” best in the high jump. He could follow in the footsteps of this year’s NCAA Champion, Leo Neugebauer of Texas who scored 8,836 points to set a NCAA Meet and Collegiate record on Thursday, June 8 in Austin, TX.

Junior Kam(Kameron) Franklin(Heritage, Frisco, TX) is a rising star. He finished fifth at last year’s UIL State 5A championships with a mark of 6’04”,  but this year he upped it to 6’10.25” to win NIN on March 12 and then went 7’00” to win his UIL Area 9-10 championships. A sub par performance at UIL Region II, 6’06” kept him from competing at the state meet.

The Rise of the Underclass

Underclasswomen rule the roost in the two mile with two seniors looking to go out winners.
Stanford bound Sophia Kennedy(Park Tudor, Indianapolis, IN), University of Arkansas signee, and Duke signee, Ella Johns are the elder states persons who will try and fend off a host of youngsters that range from eighth grade to eleventh grade.

Kennedy, the daughter of former AR 5K record holder Bob Kennedy won her state meet in 10:07.86 on June 3. Her best came on May 23 when she ran 10:00.56 to win her Region 5 meet.

La Costa Canyon’s (Carlsbad, CA)  Gioana Lopizzo has the best personal best of all the entrants. In the super fast Arcadia Invitational, she blazed a 9:59.08 to finish seventh. At the CIF State meet, she finished third in the 3200m in a time of 10:08.32. The CIF field’s top five all return next year.

Santiago(Corona, CA) sophomore Rylee Blade knocked 19 seconds off her personal best to win the CIF State meet. This after finishing second in the 1600m in a personal best of 4:46.28. She has made a mercurial ascent this year splitting the first 1600m in 5:07 of her CIF State championship win. This was the same 1600m time she opened the season with.

Another soph, Jane Hedengren(Timpview, Provo, UT) won the 800m-1600m-3200m triple at her state meet. She set a personal best of 2:09.62 in the 800m. It was the second year in a row that she has won the 1600m and 3200m. She finished second in the 3,000m at Penn Relays in 9:24.56 which is on par for a 10:09 two mile time. Hedengren has speed strength as evident from her second place finish in the mile, 4:41.08 at Arcadia, the fastest personal best in the field.

And the talent gets even younger.

Where does University of Texas signee Akala Garrett(Albemarle, NC) go from here? Higher, I guess. Garrett has won nearly everything over the last two years whether it be 55mH to 400mH or 200m to 400m. The 400mH, she has excelled the most. She won the USATF U20 Championships and then went on to win the World Athletics U20 Championships in Cali, Columbia in 56.16 which tied her for sixth fastest time in US High school History. She’ll aim to improve her times in the 100mH and 400mH this summer and go out with higher rankings in the annals of US High School History.

University of Michigan signee Sidney Green(Allen, TX) improved on her personal best in winning the Great Southwest Classic in 58.92. That was in Albuquerque at just above a mile high. She’ll come  back to sea level in Eugene which may give her the additional oxygen she’ll need to go even faster.

Junior Bear Creek(Redmond, WA) Braelyn Baker amassed 40 of her team's 45 points as the Bears finished third in the Washington State 1A TF Champs. She won the 100m, 200m,  long jump and 300mH. Her 41.02 for the 300mH was her fastest time. The junior has the fastest 100m of the top entrants, 11.65(+1.8) and could parlay that into a fast 400mH time.

University of Southern California signee, Nonah Waldron(Oak Park, MI) lost her father to lupus two years ago. She has been running in his memory since fueling her double wins and state meet records in the 100mH, 13.56(+0.8) and 300mH, 40.37, running a leg on their second place 4 x 100m and 4 x 200m relay teams that won the LP D1 team title.
