Eugene, OR- Nearly perfect temperature and conditions prevailed on day three of the Nike Outdoor Nationals. And the athletes reciprocated with more outstanding competition and performances.

Here’s some of the highlights:

Girls Champ Heptathlon

Sophomore JaiCieonna Gero-Holt, Emerald Ridge(South Hill, WA) won the heptathlon in a new personal best of 5,481. It was her first NON heptathlon championship and the second in her high school career after she won last year’s high jump.

On the second day, Gero-Holt maintained her lead to tally her final score of 5,481 which was 80 points better than her personal best of 5,401 set at the USATF U20 Championships last summer. Lydon finished second with 5,152 which was 368 points better than her previous personal best. Littlewood finished third with 5,097.

Gero-Holt’s point total set an NSAF meet record and was the ninth best performer in US High School History. The previous NSAF meet record was set by Emma Fitzgerald(Thayer, Braintree, MA) who scored 5,464 on June 18, 2016. Gero-Holt’s total also broke the US High School sophomore record of 5,170 points set by Kendell Williams, Kelly(Marietta, GA, on August 1, 2011. She also raised her own age 16 record.

Girls GARMIN  Champ 2 Mile Run

What a week for Jane Hedengren, Timpview (Provo, UT)? The sophomore came in with above modest times and comes out as one of the best sophomores in US High School history.

Freshman Elizabeth Leachman, Champion(Boerne, TX), the UIL State 5A 1600m champion, led a pack of 9 through the mile in 5:00-5:03. At that point, Sophia Kennedy, Park Tudor(Indianapolis, IN) threw in a 74.9 lap to step up the tempo.  By lap six though, Kennedy had dropped from first to fifth and would eventually drop out.

Leachman continued to push the pace as Hedengren, Charlotte Sinke, a junior from Calgary( Alberta, Canada) shadowed her through laps of 74 and 73 second.

Before the bell rung, Hedengren made her way on the inside rail to take the lead. From there the long striding, mechanically sound Hedengren powered away to a 69.94 final circuit to finish in 9:54.38. Sinke finished in 9:56.45 for second place as Leachman dipped under 10 with her 9:57.65.

Hedengren’s final mile was run in 4:52.87 and her final 800 was run in 2:23.29.

Hedengren’s time eclipsed the fastest two mile time run by a US HS sophomore. The previous record was 9:55.07 by Hannah DeBalsi, Staples(Westport, CT) in 2014. Her 9:54.38 converts to a 9:50.93 3200m which is second only to Katelyn Touhy’s(North Rockland, Thiells, NY) time of  9:47.88 run in 2018. It was a US #15 HS All Time 2 mile (including conversions from meters to yards).

Hedengren’s enroute 3,000m FAT time which was recorded for the meet isthe third fastest in US history for the 3,000. Her 9:17.26 en route mark is behind Katelyn Touhy’s 9:09.91 in 2018, and Ellie Shea’s(Belmont,MA) 9:16.74.
Touhy’s 3,000 and 3,200m times were set at age 16 which is Hedengren’s current age.

Leachman’s time, 9:57.65, was the fastest two mile time ever run by a freshman in US High School history eclipsing the 10:04.73 run by London Culbreath, North(McKinney, TX) in 2017. Her two mile time converts to 9:54.18 3200m which is second only to the 9:50.69 3200m time run by Sadie Englehardt, Ventura, CA in 2022.

Leachman set other records as well. Her 3,000m time of 9:19.41 broke the US freshman best of 9:26.32 run by Jordan Hasay, Mission Prep, San Luis Obispo, CA) in 2006.

Leachman, age  15 years 5 months and 14 days just missed the age 15 record of 9:19.09 run by Kelsey Chmiel(Saratoga Springs, NY) run in 2017.

In fourth place was Sophia Rodriguez(Dallastown Area MS, PA) lowered her personal best to 10:12.33. That lowered the international age 14 best[source: here] she set earlier this year indoors at NIN. The time converts to 10:08.78 for 3,200m which is just behind Jordan Hasay's US age 14 year old record of 10:07.56. Her 3,000m en route FAT was 9:30.72 which was behind Jordan Hasay's mark of 9:26.32.

Hedengren completed an extraordinary week. On Wednesday, she ran 4:35.69 to win the mile at the Brooks PR Invitational. The time was eighth fastest mile time in US History indoors and out and 11th fastest time indoor and outdoors with conversions from meters to yards. She is also the second fastest age 16 years old for the mile(sans conversions) for the mile.
